I did some experimenting with the Sony SS-CS5s today in the listening room at work. We have an Ashley crossover that's being used with a pair of Snell A3i speakers. I used the Snell bass cabinets with the Sonys and played with various crossover settings. The Snells are set to cross to the bass units at 300 hz. + I stumbled upon a pair of used Sony SS-A1L mini voce, badly cannibalized as the original drivers have been replaced. Spare parts are unavailable due to the rarity of the speakers. + I would like to keep the original crossover and seek similar specced drivers, an unpopular approach with suboptimal results but I am willing to gamble. Sun Active Member #1 Hi, Whilst looking for smaller speakers I came accross this ad for some discontinued Sony's. I can't find a single thing about them anywhere, does anyone have any experience with them or know of any reviews? They come with balljoints built in which would make them very easily placeable, they look like KEF eggs to me, although these are discontinued of course. Cheers Sun #2 hi sun i have the complete system you are talking about including the sa-wd100 subwoofer to go with it and i can say that they are very good all round speakers, very capable at handling movie sound tracks and music too, also good to look at which is good news if you have a partner that is not to keen on speakers everywhere, i would certainly recommend them at the right price. Sun Active Member #3 Thanks for your comments Xavier71, you're obviously pleased with them. I've seen them for £190 but without the sub you mention. I've also seen the Sony SA-VE525 which is 5 sats plus sub for the same price. As per my other active thread in here I'm just looking at the moment for a potential replacement for my Wharfedale Diamond's, the replacement will have to perform with both music and film. If you don't mind me asking how do you feel it compares to other systems that you've heard, unless of course this is your 1st one Is it capable at high volumes, do the speakers remain clear and don't become strained? Cheers #4 im jumping between your 2 threads at the moment so bare with me, anyway ref the sonys i have a pioneer thx ultra amp rated at 110wpc and when i crank up the amp i dont seem to notice anything drastic, yes there is a slight let down when the amp is turned up but bare in mind that these are entry level speakers, when i mean turned up i am talking about a level that it is not normally listened at. Verdict This system that shows so much promise on paper, but fails to deliver in action. Frustrating Pros +Strong, clear midrange+Rhythmically agile+Superb features+Good price Cons -Hard-sounding treble-Bass could go lower-Slow to respond to commands If you’re looking for a well-specced hi-fi system at a reasonable price, the Sony CMT-SBT300WB is up there as one of the an impressive array of features, including a CD player, FM/AM and DAB tuners, A2DP Bluetooth, NFC, DLNA, AirPlay, wi-fi and Apple-device playback over USB, there’s not much this little box of tricks can’t you have the patience to wait for it, that is…Sony CMT-SBT300WB Design and featuresThere’s no getting away from it. One of the first things you’ll notice is that everything you do on the SBT300WB comes with a includes tasks as frustratingly simple as turning the system on or opening the CD tray. Be prepared to see “Please Wait” flashing on the unit’s display. A past this usability snag, and there’s plenty to get your teeth stuck into here. Like any Sony product, it looks the part, all brushed metal and high gloss front panel. It is quite a big receiver, but then it squeezes a lot on the front offer the core functionality available through the remote. This includes source selection; a button for turning on Bluetooth; music controls; a large volume knob; and EQ and Bass Boost buttons. There’s also a front-mounted headphone port and that Apple-approved USB CMT-SBT300WB Getting the system onto our wireless network was easy using Sony’s free iOS- and Android-compatible NS Setup app, or you can hardwire an ethernet connection if you prefer. We’d choose this method for stability connected you can use AirPlay to play wirelessly from any compatible Apple device, and stream directly from Sony’s Music Unlimited service (subscription required) or any DLNA device sharing the same latter requires another app download, Sony’s Network Audio Remote, which will sniff out any DLNA device on your network and give you access to its shared libraries. (Any DLNA streaming requires an app for operation in fairness.)It’s simple to use and quick to get set up, but is a little restrictive with file support. WAVs and FLACs are not compatible, only allowing for MP3, WMA and AAC devices with built-in NFC (near-field communication) can connect to the SBT300WB with a single touch to the ‘N’ logo on the front. This will automatically set up the system for Bluetooth playback, without any need for manual pairing or setting CMT-SBT300WB Stacks of features count for a lot, but it’s sound quality that really matters. And with this Sony, that somewhat falls behind its huge spec good things work well – it has a nice, precise midrange that times well and offers plenty of clarity and insight into vocals. The warm tones of Adele’s Rumour Has It are conveyed with skill, while rhythmically it’s agile and stays light on its overall things certainly feel tilted towards the treble more than we’d like. While bass is tight and well controlled, it comes off sounding lean and lacks the impact it needs to pull things back into little warmth or weight in the treble, so the system can sound harsh and thin, making it a rather tiring listen over long periods, particularly at higher we found the rival Yamaha MCR-232’s treble could sound similarly sharp with certain recordings, this is more of a mainstay of the Sony’s character, and something we’d imagine would be much more difficult to live with day in, day EQ is too heavy-handed to be much help, either. Just knocking the treble down a notch or two introduces a closed-in character to the Sony CMT-SBT300WB is an impressive system on paper, offering stacks of ways to playback your music. But in doing so, and at such a good price, it feels like Sony has dropped the ball offers so many ways to play your music wirelessly, yet do so and that unrefined treble is prone to get harsher still. Combine this with its frustratingly slow response times and even this system’s feature list can’t save it from a three-star Awards 2013: Best systems See our all micro system reviewsFollow on TwitterJoin on FacebookFind us on Google+ What Hi-Fi?, founded in 1976, is the world's leading independent guide to buying and owning hi-fi and home entertainment products.
